With music that has been described as ‘absorbing sound portraits’ (4barsrest) and ‘constantly catching out and surprising’ (Judith Weir), Franklin Onyeso is a London-based composer whose reputation as an innovator within the new music space is rapidly growing. His works have been performed by a wide range of ensembles that include the RNCM Session Orchestra, City of London Symphonic Winds and the London Sinfonietta. He has held the Frequencies New Music Residency 2023 with Music for Youth and is currently composer-in-residence with Regent Brass.
In 2024, he held the composer-in-residence post with the Berkshire Chamber Music Festival and returned as the festival’s composer-in-residence for the 2025 season. Having had performances of his works across the UK in prestigious venues such as the Royal Albert Hall, King’s Place, and Westminster Abbey, Onyeso’s reputation is expanding internationally with upcoming performances in Europe.
Franklin’s deep interest in outreach and increasing the accessibility of contemporary music have led to many of his works being performed at events dedicated to widening participation, most recently, ‘one voice from the roundhouse’ was written for the Widening Participation department of the Royal Academy of Music for their annual summer courses. Similar upcoming works include a further commission from the Royal Academy of Music and a commission from The Haberdasher’s Schools.
Franklin currently holds the Sony Music UK Scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music, where he studies composition with Philip Cashian. He is also the co-founder of the student-led recording company Audio Nomads, which offers subsidised recording services to students and emerging professionals.
